DIY: Herbal face cleanup at home—get gorgeous, go natural!

Hello Gorgeous Ladies,

Hope you had a wonderful Diwali! I had a great time with my cousins and other relatives.

I love DIYs. It helps you to customize and choose the products according to your liking/skin type and also is pocket friendly :) Instead of going to a parlor and getting a herbal cleanup done by shelling out few hundred bucks, I prefer choosing herbal products and doing it myself. Trust me you will get better results if you do this on your own. I have combination skin with oily T zone and hence I prefer using herbal or natural products. The ingredients used in this DIY are easily available (you will find most of them in your kitchen) and it will leave you with fresh, supple and glowing skin. The star ingredient of this cleanup is Ubtan So let’s check out the ingredients and procedure.

Things you will need:

  • Cleanser/face wash which suites your skin.
  • Fresh malai/cream taken from milk. Malai or fresh cream will act as an excellent cleansing agent.
  • Facial Sauna for steam. You can even do without this and can simply use a utensil filled with water and heat it to produce steam.
  • Ubtan which we will use as scrub. Ubtan has many benefits which include improving the complexion, removing dead skin cells, making the skin soft and supple. Ubtan paste has been used since times unknown in beauty regimes because of its numerous benefits to the skin. Ubtan is used as a part of Abhyang Snaan (holy bath) since ages especially during Diwali J.
  • Honey. Honey is an anti-bacterial agent which prevents break outs and gives a healthy glow to the face.
  • Turmeric and yogurt face mask
How to prepare this mask: Mix 2 tablespoons yogurt  2 tablespoons gram flour or besan, juice of half a lemon and 1 tablespoon turmeric powder. Yogurt has anti bacterial properties, turmeric has been considered a magic ingredient for skin since ages because it helps in improving complexion and texture of the skin, lemon juice again helps in skin lightening and gram flour acts like a binding agent and works as a scrub to remove impurities of skin.

  • Toner.
  • Moisturizer.
  • Under eye cream (if you prefer to use it or you can skip it)
  • Ice.
  • Rose water.
This face cleanup can be customized according to individual's needs or skin type. I am penning down the method which suits my skin. Here is the list of products I use for this cleanup regimen:
  • Himalaya Neem face wash.
  • Dabur Honey.
  • Neutrogena oil free moisturizer.
  • Neutrogena fine fairness Toner.
  • Himalaya under eye cream.
Now that we know what all we need, the procedure is simple and the end result is amazing.

Steps for this face cleanup:

  1. Wash your face thoroughly with a face wash of your choice and pat the skin dry with a soft napkin.
  2. Take generous quantity of malai or fresh cream on a cotton ball and wipe the face with this cotton ball to remove any dirt particles clogging the pores.
  3. Steam your face for as long as your skin can sustain and then gently wipe the face with a facial tissue.
  4. Take a clean bobby pin and use the end to remove any blackheads on the face. Make sure you do not squeeze any pimple and be very gentle while doing this. If you are not sure how to do it, it's better to skip this step rather than subjecting the face to marks or even more breakouts.
  5. Again wipe your face with a clean napkin. Now take an ice cube and gently massage it on the face in circular movements. This will help tighten the pores which have opened up due to the steam and will also bring back the skin temperature to normal.
  6. Take a generous amount of ubtan mixed in water to form a paste and gently exfoliate the face in circular movements. Continue to exfoliate for about 8-10 mins. After this step, you will feel that your skin has become feather soft.
  7. Now take some honey and massage it over the scrub applied face for approx 5-8 minutes.
  8. Wash off the face and apply the turmeric, yogurt face mask and leave it on till it dries. Once the mask dries, wash it off and then wipe off the face with a cotton pad dipped in rose water.
  9. Pat the face dry and apply a toner of your choice followed by a moisturizer and under eye cream.
  10. You are done. You will notice that your face looks clean, fresh and the mask leaves a nice glow on the face!! :)

This entire face cleanup regime takes about 45 minutes to an hour. I prefer to follow it once a week or fortnightly. This is a simple process and includes use of products which we usually have in stored for regular use. Trust me, as easy as this cleanup looks, the results are even better. Do try this out and let me know how it works for you all. :)

Take Care,
